August 30, 2022: Finishing up early intensification
Sam continues to respond well to the chemotherapy. He is in his last 2 days of the phase of treatment called “early intensification.” It’s the phase that follows induction. After tomorrow, he’ll have a week off of chemo and then will be admitted to the hospital for a series of 4 doses of High Dose Methotrexate over the course of 8 weeks (Days 1, 15, 22, and 39 he will receive the HDMX for a 24 hour infusion through his port).. The reason this medicine is administered in the hospital is because it requires an accompanying hydration therapy that can take 2 or more days for Sam’s body to process. So he will be admitted on either Wednesday 9/7 or Thursday 9/8 and hopefully discharged sometime that weekend 🤞🏼
And based on what happens and how he responds to the first dose, they titrate and plan for the 2nd dose. If he is discharged on Day 4, then he’ll be home from Day 4 until Day 14. If he’s discharged on Day 6, then he’ll have fewer days at home before being admitted again.
Best case scenario is he’ll be discharged after 42 hours so 🤞🏼for that.
Looking forward to what I hope will be a relatively “typical” long weekend without chemo.
And happy 86th birthday to Sam’s Grandpa in TX! ❤️
