December 5, 2022: Insights into teen life

Monday, December 5, 2022 · by kathy howe

Today I am grateful for the TikToks Sam shared with me last night. I don’t look at TikTok on my own so the only ones I’ve seen are via Sam or my nephew Andrew (who is 23) . Sam and I disagreed about 1 of them being funny (love the insight into different senses of humor) but the other 4 were agreeably hilarious. This is one thing I’m not sure I would’ve shared as much with Sam without leukemia — he lets me into his world a bit more as we’re just hanging out.

Also, he told us of his adventure at a Mongolian BBQ place yesterday — he was there with some friends for lunch after the WC game. They were there last week too and I guess the other wait person had readily offered him a box to take home his leftovers (last week). Yesterday, however, it was a different person and she called over her manager and spoke to him/her in Mandarin. Sam said you should’ve seen the look on her face when he both translated what she’d said to her manager in Mandarin *and* asked her for a box in Mandarin too. He wasn’t rude but he made his point.

She gave him the box.

My teen surprises. 😂

If that's the same Mongolian BBQ in Mountain View of old, I remember my first trip there (when I broke my arm roller blading - ask John because he was the person who "discovered" me after the accident).

Anyway, a month of so later, arm all casted up, at the M-BBQ, the chef saw me struggling to one-arm everything and gruffly (in Mandarin I'm guessing) took my bowl from me and threw all kinds of scoops of sauces into the bowl, cooked it, and threw it back in the bowl and handed it to me, paying me no more attention. Best tasting Mongolian BBQ ever.

So glad Sam can have some just normal kid stuff.

Me too!!

The BBQ spot is in Menlo Park. He’s really into it. And I guess there was something about the portions being bigger last week too — you know how teen boys want the full portion , especially if they are paying for it themselves , which he was 👍🏼— so he thought this customer service person was hosing him yesterday. so he felt more righteous in busting her in her own language 😂.

❤️❤️❤️. Yay for mandarin. Who would have guessed that 3 non-Chinese roommates would all end up with kids who are fluent in mandarin. Hope they can all (5) meet up someday and share stores in mandarin about their crazy moms ❤️❤️❤️

Awesome - we all need a reminder sometimes to kick our assumptions. I bet Sam had a good chuckle!

He did! He also recalled another time when he was 12 and didn’t reveal his language ability; it was in an elevator and the 2 people were talking about him in Mandarin. He wishes now that he would’ve zapped them with one of his witty barbs in mandarin. What a difference 5 years makes. Go young adult confidence!
