October 5, 2022: Weightloss…..Again.

Thursday, October 6, 2022 · by kathy howe

Sam is down 13 lbs from 9/22 — not surprising as he has had very little solid food for the last week. Between the vomit and the mucositis, this has been extremely rough.  The last 24 hours though have reminded us what is ahead more days than not after we push through the suckage.

But nutrition and calories are still a challenge for Sam given his high metabolism and sensitive palate (I remember the first time I cooked banana bread with egg beaters instead of real eggs — EGG BEATERS — Sam was probably 3 or maybe 4 years old — and his first reaction was “what did you do to the banana bread??” And it wasn’t in a good way 😆).

If you have any yummy ideas that are calorie and fat/protein/carb dense, please post them here. He loves flavorful food — loves ramen, Chinese food, sushi, Mexican food, black beans (not pinto), chicken and pork, sausage, hamburgers, cheese including feta and sharp cheddar —  and usually likes spicy (but not sure where he is on that given the mucositis) and for the next 4 days I hope to fill him with as much homemade or restaurant made yummy food as I can (he got a “bye” for the weekend and won’t be admitted for Round 2 until Sunday night — more on that in the next post).

(Added on in an edit): Doesn’t like: nut butters, Fish, mushrooms, chunks or even bits of tomatoes (but puréed is ok).  Isn’t into ice cream or sweet things to drink right now

Smoothie recipes that you like with fruit and coconut oil or other fat sources that have a mild taste/taste blends in with fruits plus yogurt might work too.

My doctors pushed "the extras" for weight gain - i.e sour cream, yoghurt, cheeses mostly - any chance I could add something to something I was already eating that would add calories. So I didn't have to eat more - I just made everything higher calories. So if there's a burger, get multiple slices of Sam's favourite cheese on there (all this from a vegan no less...). That and "bowl based foods" really worked.

My other trick was to buy huge bowls so he can start with a XL portion of food (if he can take it). Otherwise I'd finish a bowl and not be excited about getting seconds, but if it was in front of me, my hunger would just drive me to the bottom of the bowl if it was tasty.

I make a mean turkey (although I suppose I could always make it with beef if preferred ) chili that is very filling. It has a decent kick to it but I can manage the spicy-ness to whatever level Sam wants. Then you add cheese and avocado to it and you have a very rich meal. Let me know! Happy to bring a fresh batch over anytime. (And if you/Sam like it, it freezes really well and can be heated in minutes whenever you like).

When my mom was sick, they really encouraged peanut butter. In the meantime: Erin's Ramen (can be made with pork or chicken, but I make it vegan. For the pork or chicken, sauté thin slices and add at the end. Sauté 16 oz of mushrooms in garlic and ginger paste for 5sih minutes. Add soy sauce (maybe 1/4 c) and 1 tablespoon miso paste. Add 3-4 cups spinach, 1 cup corn, and 1 cup shredded carrots. Add 4-5 cups of water. Once it has boiled, turn it down, and add 3-4 packages of ramen noodles (we use the instant ones without the packets.) We add fried onions on top and do 6 minute soft boiled eggs for those who like them. It's a little bit of a miracle food in our house.

How is he with sweets? I make some killer sticky buns that I would be very pleased to drop off for Sunday AM.

Peanut butter milkshakes!

Good idea for many teens — mine isn’t into nut butter. Not sure what’s not to like about nut butter — he didn’t get this from me! 😂. And Zack doesn’t like chocolate!?!?!? Also not from me (Sam does like chocolate but not as much right now — too sweet).

Does he like unagi (Japanese grilled eel), you can get the frozen and marinated one from Chinese grocery store, microwave and serve with rice. Add kimchi, sliced cucumber or whatever salad to complete the meal.

Or go shop at Mega Mart (the previous K Marker) on El Camino, Sunnyvale. They have some ready meal set including unagi rice bowl, spicy meat bowl etc in the hot deli section.

I second the milkshake idea - pb is a brilliant add. This is one of my favorite recipes of all time - protein and carb dense, flavorful, and more lime crema is delicious and calorie full:

Have you tried musubi? It's fried Spam on a patty of rice wrapped in seaweed. (Fat, sodium, carb, tiny bit of fiber.) This is one of Kaeden's comfort foods. Sometimes there is a teriyaki type of sauce that goes between the Spam and rice, but Kaeden prefers the purity of the no-sauce style. I'd be happy to make some and drop them off if you'd like to try some. Just let me know. I'm also aware that the thought of Spam is off-putting to many. :)

I will check with him. He’s mentioned this before as something he’s liked and gotten from friends at lunch time by trading or mooching :)

A trick backpackers use to get extra calories is to add oil to everything. It has the highest calorie to weight ratio of any food. Might work for Sam too if he can’t eat large quantities. We use olive oil, but if the flavor is too strong, vegetable or canola oil are just as good

Our Sam, who also has a sensitive palate and weight issues found that adding avocado was both tasty and a good source of nutrition. They often take it on rice to school for lunch. Or add it to soups, made into guac with chips....you name it.
