September 29, 2022: Update

Friday, September 30, 2022 · by kathy howe

After the highs of coming home and reconnecting, come the lows of the reality of high dose methotrexate: it’s a doosey of a medicine and Sam has had a challenging time with the nausea and vomiting.

He’s strong and resilient and we’re still hopeful about HoCo this Saturday, but it can’t be fun to think “oh shit I have 3 more rounds of this to go!?!?!”  He’s vomiting 2-3 times per day still and that’s *with* the anti-nausea meds in place (and we’re a week out from the 1st administration of the medicine and a week ahead of the 2nd administration — I guess I was hoping for a break in here somewhere).

It’s rough to see him vomit.  I don’t mind vomit, in and of itself, and I know his body is fighting and vanquishing leukemia once and for all (FU leukemia!) and it’s rough to see our teenage son go through this phase.

Today was not a good day.

He doesn’t complain, though. He acknowledges the pain involved and he agrees that vomiting and nausea both suck, but it sucks with a purpose and that’s what keeps us going. The only way is through. And through we will go. Together.

Hoping the vomiting passes soon but vanquishing leukemia (love that) is a great phrase and image.

I am so sorry. Chemo vomiting is awful. It really is.

Vomiting like that sounds brutal. What a great attitude you have created for you all - that it's part of the fight, part of the healing. I imagine you all visualizing the future while his body does this hard work: his body healed and glowing with health.
